UFC Vegas 121
Glover Teixeira revealed the reason for the sudden illness suffered by Raoni Barcelos in the main event of UFC Vegas 121 last week
The Brazilian was facing Raul Rosas Jr. when he passed out in the fifth round, without having taken a strike at that moment. According to the former UFC champion, who was part of Barcelos’ team, the episode happened due to brain inflammation.
During an appearance on Overdogs Brasil, Glover stated that Barcelos underwent medical exams following the episode, which identified the brain inflammation.
“They went there, ran the tests on him, and there was brain inflammation; he suffered head trauma. Perhaps due to that inflammation he lost consciousness, maybe it was the body’s defense mechanism. ‘Let’s stop, because this guy isn’t going to stop,’ his mind was stronger than his body,” Teixeira said.
Glover also explained that the episode caused concern among the team members precisely because it did not occur following a strike or a sequence of exchanges.
“It was different because it wasn’t a knockout; if it were a knockout, they’re already used to that. But happening out of nowhere like that, people were left wondering several things: could it be his heart? Could it be something brain-related?”, concluded the former champion.
