WWE vs. AAA
Survivor Series has always come down to pride, physicality, and bragging rights. With the fall classic hitting its 40th anniversary in Houston this year, WWE is swinging for the fences. Rey Mysterio, the legendary luchador who now serves as AAA’s General Manager, just announced a first-of-its-kind 10-man crossover match for the show. Top stars from both WWE and AAA will share the ring in a traditional five-on-five bout.
How Team USA vs. Team Mexico Came Together
Mysterio broke the news while chatting on Stephanie McMahon’s What’s Your Story? podcast. According to him, the match came together after a quick conversation with Raw and SmackDown General Managers Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis.
“We are going to put together something very special — a classic five vs. five Survivor Series match at Survivor Series, where it will be Team USA vs. Team Mexico,” Mysterio said.
For Mysterio, this matchup hits close to home. He spent years breaking down barriers for cruiserweights and luchadors across ECW, WCW, and finally WWE. Looking at how massive lucha libre has become today still blows him away, and he admitted he never expected it to make this kind of global impact.
Bringing Back the 1987 Format
Back when the event debuted in 1987, the whole hook was “teams of five thrive to survive.” That traditional five-on-five elimination match actually disappeared after 2021 once the double-ring WarGames cage moved up from NXT and took over the main event spot.
Now, Mysterio is bringing the old-school format back to life. The show goes down live at Houston’s Daikin Park on Saturday, Nov. 28. We still don’t know the official 10-man lineup, or how much say Pearce and Aldis will get when picking the teams. Still, looking at who is currently free on the roster gives us plenty to speculate about.
Who Could Suit Up for Team USA?
If WWE and AAA are really putting their best foot forward, the American side has a deep bench of talent not yet booked for Houston.
- Cody Rhodes: “The American Nightmare” is as natural a fit for Team USA captain as you can get.
- Trick Williams: He already holds the United States Championship, so slotting him in here practically writes itself.
- CM Punk: Bringing in Chicago’s finest would give the team serious star power right out of the gate.
- Chad Gable: After revitalizing his career over in AAA, Gable actually knows how the Mexican roster works.Plus, five-on-five matches are grueling marathons, and nobody has a gas tank quite like Gable.
- LA Knight: Does “The Megastar” even need a reason? If there is a chaotic brawl happening in Houston, Knight belongs in the middle of it.
Potential Heavy Hitters for Team Mexico
Across the ring, Team Mexico has the pieces to put together the fastest, most breathtaking five-man squad the event has ever seen.
- Penta: He brings a ruthless edge and the kind of hard-hitting grit you need when a match breaks down.
- Rey Fenix: You can count on one hand the number of wrestlers alive who can match what Fenix does on the ropes.
- Dragon Lee: Pure speed. He can flip the momentum of a match in about three seconds flat.
- El Grande Americano: He is the reigning AAA Mega Champion, which makes him an automatic lock for a spot like this.
- Rey Mysterio: Yes, he runs the show as general manager, but he is still an active wrestler. Having arguably the greatest luchador in WWE history lace up his boots to lead the squad himself feels way too good to pass up.
